a simple snowman . . .

We recently returned home from a Winter vacation to Heber Valley, Utah, where we enjoyed cold temperatures (usually 32 degrees F and below) and snow.

It was the first time our little ones experienced snow. We took them sledding, tubing, and made snow angels. We even took a slow, relaxing train ride and saw beautiful scenery

The one thing that the kids wanted to do while we were there was build a snowman. Although there was a lot of snow, it was too dry . . . too dry to pack, so we didn't get to build one.

With supplies that I already had on hand, I thought it would be fun to make a snowman today. It's no where near the 'real thing,' but the little ones enjoyed making it nonetheless.

We arrived home 2 short days ago. We haven't unpacked . . . and the house is a mess . . . but that's ok. It's the simple things (like making a snowman and sipping on hot cocoa all afternoon) that often make some of our happiest memories.

materials
white poster board
cotton balls
spray adhesive
fake snow or glitter
black and orange scrapbook or construction paper
bottle caps or buttons
ribbon
twigs
Elmers or Tacky GLUE
hot glue gun (for nose, eyes, mouth, buttons & twigs)

simple instructions
Cut a large 3-tier snowman out of white poster board.
With glue bottles in hand, the kids took turns squeezing small puddles of glue
to adhere the cotton balls.
While they carefully glued cotton balls onto the poster board,
I rolled a cone out of orange paper and then hot glued it onto the face.
After the cotton balls dried to the paper, I sprayed the surface with the spray adhesive . . .
and then the little ones sprinkled fake snow on top.
I set it outside to dry for 15 minutes.
We made 'coal' eyes and a mouth out of crumpled black construction paper,
which I also hot glued to the cotton.
The kids cut twigs from the birch tree in front of our house to make the snowman's arms.
And finally, we tied a ribbon around her neck for a scarf . . .
and used bottle caps for 'buttons.'

I think she turned out pretty darn cute!

LET'S STAY in touch!

  4. Well I'll be, you were in our neck of the woods. Heber is about 45 min. away from us. Were you staying at the Daniels Summit resort? We stayed there once with our two youngest for Valentines and snowmobiled. It was a great adventure! The snow here lately has been really light and not good packing. We tried to make a snowman a little over a month ago and it was a no go. Before that it was great packing snow. Your creative snowman is a cute alternative. One bonus, he won't melt! Thanks for sharing with SYC. Pinned for family fun.
    hugs,
    Jann

  5. You and kids made a perfect memento to your trip. Such a cute thing to put up on mantel or wherever to remember and decorate for winter. Good for you making the snow man instead of unpacking first, cause sure enuf as soon as you unpacked something else could come up that needed doing. Kids don't wait to grow up. Wish I'd learned that when my kids were small. I was taught and harped at to keep a clean house no matter what. Now my kids are adults with own families. I wasn't an example as I didn't have one but I do tell them kindly about enjoying their kids while they're little. All our grandkids are teenagers now. So glad to see you learned and cared much earlier. Happy days
