farmer's market . . . home away from home

I was excited when Priscilla, the Community Coordinator for DogVacay,  invited me to participate in their Home Away from Home project.

Knowing that this means something different to everyone, inspired them to reach out to bloggers and the Community and ask,  "What is your home away from home?"

For surfers, it might be the beach . . . for an animal lover, a shelter . . . or for an avid gardener, maybe it's their garden.

For me, it's a Farmer's Market. The Farmer's Market reminds me of a simpler time. It's a source of beauty and inspiration.

I began visiting Farmer's Markets more than 20 years ago. I have fond memories of early Saturday morning strolls under and through the tall white canopy tents.

It's a unique experience of sights and smells. Fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, fresh breads, ART, musicians, flowers . . . and so much more . . . nestled under tall white tents . . . all under the big blue sky. And everyone is so friendly, vendors and shoppers alike.

It's a wonderful environment to relax and stroll, visit with local growers, learn about new fruit and vegetable varieties, sample foods, ooh & ahhhh over heavenly desserts brought in by local bakeries, and visit with local artisans.

Look at the treasures I found last week . . . white tulips for $3/bunchpurple carrots, and a rainbow of swiss chard.

And for a blogger like me, the Farmer's Market is a great source of inspiration. I find many of the fruits and vegetables you see in my posts from our local Farmer's Market. They're the base of many of the dishes you see. My favorite find is always fresh-cut flowers. I buy them every week, whether from the market or the Farmer's Market; but there's something extra special about the ones I find at the Farmer's Market.

For me, the Farmer's Market is my home away from home. It's a source of inspiration and beauty . . . a connection that reminds me of my past and brings me joy. It's a simple tradition that I share with my little ones. I hope that as they grow, they too, will find enjoyment and inspiration here.

Where is your home away from home?

roasted carrots . . . from farm stand to table, part 2

I shared photos of these beautiful long, slender carrots in yesterday's post, along with a few other Farmer's Market finds.

I wish I knew the proper name for them, because they're so vibrant and sweet, especially after they've been roasted in the oven. I like to leave a few inches of the carrot top on them, as it gives them an elegant look.  I serve roasted carrots throughout the year, but think that they're extra special this time of year.

Ingredients
12 carrots
3 Tablespoons olive oil
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Preparation
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Wash the carrots. Using a peeler, remove outer layer of carrot. Chop the green tops approximately two inches from top of carrot. If the carrots are thick, pierce the thick part with a sharp knife. This will allow the carrot to cook evenly.

Toss them in a bowl with the olive oil, salt, and pepper. Transfer to a sheet pan and roast in the oven for 20 minutes, until browned and tender.

Toss the carrots with chopped fresh parsley, season to taste, and serve. Enjoy!
Serves 4 to 6.

carrots . . . from farm stand to table

The kids and I ventured to our local Farmer's Market this morning and found so many treasures. I love strolling through and sampling seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables. I've also found that it's a great way to get my little ones to try new things (which is quite hard to do).

I bought these gorgeous, slender carrots for 75 cents a bunch!

Their lush green tops and bright orange roots are always a favorite of mine.

You're probably wondering about the unique centerpiece? I displayed them in a glass vase like this one for the first time three years ago at my oldest daughter's garden party. Almost all of her friends didn't know that carrots have lush green tops. Since then, I make it a point to serve them this way. Aren't they beautiful?

Oh, and here's a peak at a few more of today's Farmer's Market finds . . .

Do you see the Meyer lemons? I made a beautiful Lemon & Honey Tart today. I can't wait to share the recipe and photos with you. It's surely one of the desserts I plan to serve on Easter Sunday.

Summer peaches . . .

My favorite time of year to visit our local  Farmer's Market is in the Summer and Fall.

Here we are last Summer. Quite spectacular, isnt' it!?!

It's the perfect place to bring your family to experience the season's treasures.

You'll find happy Farmers, plenty of incredibly fresh and ripe fruits and vegetables on display for tasting, fresh baked goods, and a leisurely pace that's quite welcome to this busy mom.

Like always, we came home with the most colorful and unique heirloom tomatoes (at reasonable prices!), garden vegetables, and fruits . . .

                                            like these Summer yellow peaches.

I wish you could smell their intense sweet aroma.

. . . And they were so juicy!

You know, the kind of peaches that require you to eat them over a napkin. Yeah, those ones!

We enjoyed them in their natural sweet state . . .

. . . and then I hid several for a few dessert and beverage recipes that I've been wanting to try out.

I can't wait to share them with you, so stay tuned!

Not sure where to find a Farmer's Market near you?
